JOHOR BARU: Fruit farmers have been urged to sell and market their own produce to reap higher profits rather than be over-dependent on middlemen.
Johor Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) director Faridulatrash Md Mokri said it was more profitable for farmers to play the role of traders as well if they want to earn more for themselves.
"Fruit farmers should be more aggressive in both planting and selling their produce.
"This will maximise their profits. If they depend on middlemen, the latter will only buy their fruits at wholesale prices.
"Sometimes, the farmers are forced to sell their fruits at below cost price when there is a glut."
In such cases, Faridulatrash said the farmers' revenue would not reflect the efforts they had put in at their farms.
He said the role of middlemen was still important, although farmers should give priority to their profits.
